6. Ukrainian coloring eggs with natural pigments πΊπ¦
Natural pigments are substances in the form of droplets or crystals attached to proteins, and they are the color carriers of living organisms. The most widespread pigments are porphins, carotenoids, anthocyanins and flavones. Onions, spinach, nettles, purple cabbage, dandelion, turmeric or coffee can be used as a source of natural pigment.
One of the popular activities where natural pigments are used is Easter egg dyeing-coloring and it is a traditional way of coloring among many peoples. Especially, Ukrainian are famous for this activity. Dyeing eggs with natural pigments is quite simple. The eggs are tucked into the bulb, that is, in the shell of purple or red onion, and everything is soaked in water. Then we add a little salt and a spoonful of vinegar.
After painting, many peoples decorate the eggs with wax by drawing various patterns and shapes. Decorated Easter eggs are called Pysanky in Ukraine.
